March Along - a patch on VCV Rack

December 1, 2018

Lately I have been into messing around and learning VCV Rack, which is a virtual modular synthesizer. Here is a recording of one of the patches that I made. I call it "March Along" because it reminds me of someone that is marching along.

It features one oscillator module called Treasure by from the MSM plugin by Michael Struggl and then a bunch of other random modules including a...

Try Shuffling

December 8, 2017

You like to be organized. You like things in order. You like things to be done a specific way. You like to be consistent. Those are all good things. Try to shake it up, though!

Instead of writing that list in order, try shuffling them. See what happens. Try thinking about them as blobs. Take off the numbers. Imagine you can't use the word "the."

Try skipping to your next meeting.

Try introducing yourself in a different way than you have...

New Track: DreamCastle_629's Car Crash

November 29, 2017

Last Saturday I stumbled across a somewhat viral video on YouTube by DreamCastle_629. He got into a car accident and then recorded himself singing a ditty along with the car horn that was stuck repeatedly honking. This song sparked my imagination and I couldn't stop thinking about using it to create my own version as an embellished track.

Here you can hear the original ditty by DreamCastle_629 in this video:

I wasn't quite sure what exactly I wanted to...

Goodbye Social Media

November 24, 2017

Last week I deleted my accounts from social media, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. I find no value in those services and I hardly used them so I figured why do I need these? I don't need social media and social media doesn't need me.

I noticed that being on Facebook and scrolling through the messages and reading it didn't make me feel happy or enlightened nor connected. I was just observing a mess of noise. And there is no end to the noise; you just keep...

Where, Whither, Whence and Other Adverbs

February 4, 2010

There are some words in the English language that are not used so much in modern speech that I think are cool. Today, I am thinking of three adverbs of location (where, here, there) that have associated adverbs of motion.

The first one is whither. Whither means "to where". Although it is acceptable to say "where are you going?" A way to express yourself more precisely would be say "whither are you going?". The word where implies that you are currently situated at...

Extracting Data from Wii Fit Plus Savegame Files

January 27, 2010

One neat feature about Nintendo's Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus is that it tracks your BMI (body mass index) and weight daily. You can view your progress of weight loss in a nice graph on your TV. I have been interested in extracting this data so that I can have it available elsewhere besides on the TV with the Wii on. Through some internet research and some examination of the Wii Fit Plus savegame files I have been able to access this data and get it on my computer.

Save Game to SD...

The Mouse Needs a New Name

November 18, 2007

I have always hated the term "mouse" used for the computer mouse. I think we should call it something else instead.

A while back, a friend and I were chatting about what other possible names the device could have. One we came up with was "Keyboard-less access Interface (KAI)". We had a few good ideas, as I remember, but none so great as what the original name of the device was as in the patent for it, from 1970. In the patent it is called the "X-Y Position...

Our House, in the Middle of our Street

July 14, 2007

It was the middle of summer and we all were sitting in our family room. A cool breeze blew through the window. It was nice to have a cross-breeze in our house. It was especially nice of certain hot days. But not today, however; today it is cool outside.

It doesn't feel like July, actually, because it is so cool. I remember past years where July days are so hot, that the heat is unbearable.

I remember riding my bike on hot summer days and coming home and sweating and drinking...

Playgrounds and Parks

May 17, 2006

I had a random thought today that there should be more playgrounds and parks in the world. I didn't think that for any particular reason, it just kind of popped into my head. After I had some time to think about it, I realized maybe it is because it is fun to go to playgrounds and play.

I love going down slides, but not when there is too much static electricity. I never really got into monkey bars, but I love objects to climb around on and hide behind. I had a lot of fun as a...

Self-aware Dog Limbs

March 8, 2006

You know... there comes a time in every dog's life when, unbeknownst to the dog, one of its limbs will take on a mind of its own.

The limb will, as they say, become self-aware. And as self-aware things often do, the limb will in good time find that it is feeling a bit hungry. It will wait quietly for a few moments, hoping for a handout. But soon it becomes impatient with the rest of the dog, who is not used to feeding its limbs independently.

Under the pretense of...
